Frequently Asked Questions
If the FAQ below does not address your issue, don't hesitate to e-mail us at dlrsystems@dlrwebdesign.com

Do you handle website redesign?
Absolutely! Just give us an idea of what you'd like to do and what kind of changes you'd like to make. Simply call or email or you may fill out the questionnaire located here if you have detailed information you'd like to share right away. In either case, indicate your current website, and we'll get the ball rolling.

I want to work with my current site and I just want some advice. Can you help me?
We'd be happy to help. Again, you can go to the questionnaire, give us your current site url, and we'll see what we can come up with for you. We'll even offer you a free quote with the consultation. If you should decide to go with DLR to redesign your site, we'll wave the consultation fee.

I'd like a Flash intro for my site. What can you do for me?
Flash movies start at $75. Depending on how intricate you'd like to get, you will be able to walk away with an impressive Flash intro at a very reasonable price. Check out our Flash Portfolio!

Do you design sites entirely in Flash?
Yes, we do! Visually stimulating, Flash can be a very effective tool in creating interest in your product or services. Music and sound effects in a Flash environment add even more to the experience. We can design a Flash site for you at a shockingly reasonable cost. (Flash design requires specialized software. We can extend our services to you for site updates.) Ask us about designing in Flash!

What are platforms and server components and why do I have to know about them?
Technically, you don't. It's your IT person's job to know about them, but if you're running a small business out of your home or if you simply don't have an IT department, it's a good idea to know what we're talking about - especially if we tell you that you need to have it for your website. Server Components are applications that are required to perform duties between the client and the server. These include e-mail, form processing, FTP and in the case of many eCommerce solutions, support for CF (Cold Fusion), ASP (Active Server Pages), PHP (Personal Home Page or now Hypertext Preprocessor) or JS (Javascript).

All those abbreviations may sound daunting, but most servers hosting business sites support most or even all of these scripting languages.

If you are "self-hosted," are on a basic personal webpage package with your ISP or if your site does not support these protocols and you wish to implement an eCommerce solution, we will simply relocate your site to a server that supports them.

What is CGI?
CGI (Computer Gateway Interface) is a means by which a server will acquire and process information from a web user and return a result. Form processing (in contrast to e-mail) is an example of CGI scripting. A web user fills out a form on a web page and submits it to the server. The CGI script located on the server processes it, forwards the requested information to the recipient of the submitted information and generally returns a success (or failure) result to the user who submitted the form.

What is the difference between an ISP and a Host or Hosting Server?
The important thing is to make the distinction between your ISP and your website host. Although they can be, they do not necessarily have to be the same. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is just that. They provide you with access to the Internet (via dial-up, DSL, T1, etc). They may also provide you with e-mail addresses and a small amount of free space where you could upload a website. In some cases, this small amount of web space is enough for the personal website owner who wants to put up a small fan site or show off vacation pictures. It can serve any number of limited prospects. Your ISP may also offer you a web hosting package whereby you may upload a much larger scale site to fit most any need. It is in this example that your ISP and your Hosting Server are one and the same.

Another popular option is to Host your website through another company. You still retain your ISP as a means to access the internet, but an independent host will often give you more space, bandwidth and general options for less money than your ISP could offer you.

What is FTP?
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - like its counterparts HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) for relaying web pages and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) for relaying e-mail - is a way to exchange files between computers on the internet. FTP utilizes TCP/IP and is most commonly used by creators to upload web pages to a server or to download files from a site.

What do you mean by electronic format?
It means having your data accessible by a computer - either on a hard drive, burned to a cd or floppy or if your current site is already online. If you can view your images or your typed documents on your computer, they are in an electronic format.

What if I have only a few things or nothing in electronic format?
Having your company information in electronic format is to your advantage, but it is not necessary. DLR Web Design will simply take the hard copies of all your information - brochures, typed documents, photos, etc - and convert it all into a format that can be uploaded to the web. Unfortunately, a wave of our magic wand won't do the work. Text has to be typed, pictures have to be scanned and it all has to be properly formatted and optimized for web presentation. In many cases, costs can be substantially lowered if information is in an electronic format before we receive it.

Can you just add a shopping cart to a site I already have?
Absolutely! We can build you an online store that will integrate seamlessly with your current website.

I have a small business I run out of my home. Can you help me if I'm on a budget?
Yes, we can. We can offer any number of economical solutions. Just tell us what your budget is and we'll crunch numbers and time in order to get you into the site you want. Even an online store!

I have a small number of items I want to sell on the web. Can you help me with an economical solution?
In a word? Yes. If you have a small number of items and if you have no need of administrative functions, PayPal may be an economical solution for you.

What forms of payment do you take?
In addition to standardized invoicing and check acceptance, we will accept credit cards through PayPal. PayPal is free, it's easy to sign up and most important to us, it's secure for you. We will accept personal or business checks, money orders or credit cards. Or you may debit directly from your PayPal account. A small transaction fee will be added to your invoice if payment is made via PayPal.

Will I be able to work on my own site after you've completed it?
Of course you can! With WYSIWYG design tools such as Dreamweaver or NVU or if you know how to code in a text editor, you can easily modify the content of your site yourself. DLR Web Design doesn't currently offer formal web maintenance services, so if you have constantly changing content, you'll need to provide your own webmaster to make frequent changes. On a case by case basis, we can arrange site maintenance and update services.

What if I have problems with the site after you finish it?
The sites we build are tested to insure absolute integrity in all the coding. If we find errors or coding problems after our final test and within our 60 day floating period, we will repair the problem free of charge; however, if we find the errors are due to changes our customers have made to their own site, there will be an hourly programming charge. Please see our policies and notices page.

If it is a design issue or if you wish something changed on any portion of the website for aesthetic purposes after your final approval and our final testing, there will be an hourly charge. Please refer to the pricing schedule.

Until your site is uploaded, tested and you've given the thumbs up, we are at your disposal.

I'm having trouble with the administrative back end of my eCommerce site. Can you help?
Yes. If this is a bug or programming issue with the merchant tools, we will direct you to the experts who created the software. We will also provide you with help files and a knowledge base resource to help you answer any questions you may have.

Who do I go to if my customers are having trouble using the shopping cart?
In the event that there is a bug or software issue preventing your shopping cart from functioning properly, you have two options. You may come to us, explain the problem and if we can help you, we will. If we can't, we will present the issue to the developers of the shopping cart software and they will offer a solution which we (or they) will implement for you. If you wish, you may also go to the horse's mouth and approach the software developers directly. If there is a bug or glitch in their program, they will want to know about it in order to fix it for their next version release. Service for bugs or programming glitches is generally offered free of charge.

Can I have a full service cart without the expense of a merchant account and an SSL certificate?
Yes, you can! With a PayPal IPN, you can use PayPal as your payment processor. This is a considerable economic savings. If at a later date you wish to get a merchant account and an SSL, your store can be easily updated.

Will I have to move my current site?
That depends on what kind of site you want and what you want your site to do for you. If you don't need a store, you can host your site almost anywhere. If you already have a site for your business, it's likely that you won't need to do a thing if you want to feature an online store. Most servers hosting business sites will offer all the support you'll need. If we design a full service eCommerce solution for you, we require your web host to support CF (Cold Fusion), Secure Socket Layering (SSL) for secure cart transactions (unless a PayPal IPN is used) and database support in the form of MS Access, MySQL or MS SQL.

If you are "self-hosted," are on a basic personal webpage package with your ISP or if your site does not support the platform or protocols necessary for a shopping cart to function, you may have to host your site elsewhere. DLR Web Design can offer several economic solutions, and we will be happy to relocate you.

Establishing an eCommerce business sounds complicated - and expensive. What does it involve?
Quite frankly, it is not as complicated as the terminology makes it sound. If you are unfamiliar with terms like SSL (Secure Socket Layer), payment gateway, real-time processing and the inner-workings of a shopping cart, it certainly is daunting, and we would be remiss if we did not point out that most incarnations of a full-service online store can be expensive for the merchant. Some of this expense is relative to the size of your product database. DLR Web Design will charge you for the work we do in creating your store for you; however, there are also varying charges (if you do not choose PayPal IPN) for SSL certificates ($39 - $300) and internet merchant accounts with payment gateways which allow you to accept credit cards online. These are third party services over which DLR Web Design has no control, but we will make the acquisition of them as simple as possible.

I'm having computer problems. Can you help me?
Yes, if you are local to the Monterey Bay Area. Please inquire for details and pricing on our support page.

I want you to build my website. Where should I start?
Wonderful! The best place to start, they say, is at the beginning. Please fill out our questionnaire, give us as much information as you can and we'll take it from there. You may also email or call if you have questions.

There are many things I'd like to discuss in person before I commit to hiring you. Can we set up a meeting?
If you are a local business in the Monterey Bay Area, we'd be delighted to set up a meeting at your office to discuss your online presence and what we can do for you. It is also possible we can arrange out of town meetings. Please call or e-mail for an appointment.

I'd like a comprehensive message board/forum on my site, but I don't want to spend a lot for it. Can you help?
Certainly! Our normal fee for implementing a customized message board on your site is listed in our additional pricing schedule located here. If you'd like to do the customizing and database configuration yourself, the price will drop considerably. We will upload it and you can do the rest for less!

Can you create a logo for me?
You bet! DLR Web Design uses industry standard design tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Image Ready for our graphic design. We can design a logo for you or your company in full color, two color, grayscale - suitable for your online presence, business cards and letterhead.

How much will my website cost?
Our prices and services are listed here. Your site's cost will be relative to the number of pages created and the complexity of each page.
